She understood

that most others rarely chose to engage with reality.

Reality was sobering. Unflinching. Unfair. Bleak.

In response, most others chose to evade reality

by self-anesthetizing their pain and their worries.


Of course, she was not absolved

from engaging in these same pitfalls, herein described.

However, she cherished her precise recognition of this truth.

She was willing to be honest with herself

in ways that most others would not dare explore.

This, she knew, was her strength.
